SmartScape

Inland Empire Waterkeeper is partnering with local water districts to assist residents in transitioning their yard from high water use landscaping. The SmartScape Team offers assistance with landscaping projects including identifying rebates, plant section, installation, and maintenance.

The Inland Empire SmartScape team is hosting workshops and programs throughout San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Workshops cover a variety of topics and many are for the whole family!

If you're interested in learning more information or booking a workshop with our team, please contact Ray Hiemstra at [email protected].

Water is a critical resource that is not naturally abundant in Southern California. While we import water to meet our needs, it comes at a high cost to the environment and is becoming increasingly expensive. Over 60 percent of residential water use occurs outside of the home, mostly for landscaping. We can change that.

What is SmartScape?

A SmartScape is a landscape that is specifically designed to use native and low-water use plants that provide beauty as well as economic and environmental benefits. A SmartScape showcases plants that are “smart” for the Inland Empire because they can thrive and adapt to local weather conditions. A SmartScape yard costs less to maintain than a traditional “water-thirsty” landscape and can be maintained organically while attracting wildlife such as hummingbirds and butterflies.

A SmartScape landscape allows residents to enjoy the Inland Empire’s great climate and outdoor lifestyle while reducing outdoor water use.
