Urgent: Action need on AB1000/Cadiz Water Project 

Urgent:  Don’t give up on AB1000 just yet!

Call California Senators Kevin DeLeon and Ricardo Lara this week and tell them to support AB1000, the California Desert Protection Act, and move it forward out of Committee. Tell them to do the right thing and protect our desert.

Background: AB1000 is legislation aimed to safeguard groundwater in California’s Mojave Desert that sustains wildlife and parks including Mojave Trails National Monument and Mojave National Preserve and wildlife. The legislation seeks to safeguard the desert from an unsustainable threat that has persisted for 20 years: the Cadiz Inc. water mining proposal. Cadiz Inc. seeks to pump 16 billion gallons of water each year for 50 years, from the heart of Mojave Trails National Monument and the aquifers connected to Mojave National Preserve and Joshua Tree National Park. It is a reason Mojave Trails will likely be reduced by 500,000 acres. Many have collectively fought the Cadiz project for decades, but the Trump Administration is pulling out all the stops to move the project forward despite concerns raised by federal agencies and environmental groups.

Senators DeLeon and Lara held AB1000 from receiving a vote this past Friday, despite strong support from the Governor and Lieutenant Governor. BUT, the legislative session does not end until September 15th and we have information that indicates AB1000 still has a chance to move forward. Please call Senators Kevin DeLeon and Ricardo Lara and urge them to support and move the bill forward. Bonus: Tell DeLeon you won’t support him for Lt Governor if he kills this bill. Call them out on social media too, especially Twitter.

Urgent: Urge Your State Senator to Protect Californians’ Health and Environment!

The new leadership in Washington DC is working to decimate critical federal environmental protections. But three groundbreaking bills (#PreserveCA SB 49, SB 50 and SB 51) now working their way through the California State Senate would maintain  key federal environmental regulations as state law—even if Congress allows Trump to dismantle them—safeguarding our air, water, wildlife and health regardless of what happens in DC.

  • SB 49, the California Environmental and Worker Defense Act, would make current federal clean air, clean water, worker safety, safe drinking water, and endangered species standards enforceable under state law if the federal government rolls back and weakens those standards.
  • SB 50, the Public Lands Protection Act, is designed to protect lands in California from threats to sell off federal land in California to private parties for mining, oil drilling or other exploitive activities.
  • SB 51, the Whistleblower and Public Data Protection Act, would shield federal employees such as engineers and scientists working for federal agencies in California from losing state professional licenses for bringing to light violations of law, unethical actions or dangers to public health and safety committed by their agencies or others.

California has seen its share of environmental disasters in recent years, including the Aliso Canyon methane leak that sickened and displaced thousands of families, and the oil spill at Refugio State Beach that polluted the Santa Barbara Channel, harmed wildlife and negatively impacted tourism, recreation and the economy.
